Developmental Editing

Your story deserves to remain yours.

Developmental editing is all about taking the manuscript as a whole; exploring its structure, pacing, characters, themes, and the way all of those pieces work together. My priority isn't to rewrite your story for you. I strive to help you see what is already there, what may need strengthening, and where your manuscript can become the story you intended it to be without removing your unique voice and vision from the process.

I approach each manuscript as its own work rather than trying to force it into a formula. There will be no removing things to fit trends here. Your voice, your vision, and your creative choices matter.

What I Offer

Story & Structure

Looking at the overall structure of your manuscript, including pacing, plot development, narrative flow, and whether the story is accomplishing what you want it to.

Characters & Development

Examining character development, motivations, relationships, arcs, and whether your characters feel fully realized within the story.

Themes & Cohesion

Looking at the themes and ideas running through your manuscript and how effectively they connect across the work.

The Big Picture

Stepping back from individual sentences to consider how all of the pieces work together—and identifying areas that may need more development, clarification, or strengthening.

My focus is on the story as a whole. I'm not here to rewrite your manuscript or make it sound like someone else's. My job is to help you understand what your manuscript is doing, where it may be struggling, and where its strengths can shine.

My Process

A circular infographic depicting the stages of story development, with a large star in the center labeled 'Your Story.' Surrounding the star are phases titled 'Connect,' 'Prepare,' 'Edit,' 'Review,' and 'Grow,' each with bullet points outlining steps such as inquiry, agreement, developmental editing, editorial review, and growing through open communication.

What You Can Expect

  • A fresh perspective on your manuscript

  • Honest, constructive feedback

  • Attention to your story's unique goals and voice

  • No removal of story aspects

  • Clear explanations when something isn't working

  • A detailed editorial letter you can actually use during revision

  • Space to ask questions after the edit

Expect to have a collaborative experience that prioritizes you and your story as it is. My only job is to bring your vision to a higher level and polish your work.

Let’s Talk Shop

Every manuscript comes to the editing process with something different at its heart. Before I take on a project, I want to understand what you're creating, what matters most to you about it, and where you'd like another set of eyes.

Tell me a little about your manuscript and what you're hoping to accomplish. I'll review your inquiry and get back to you so we can decide whether we're the right fit to work together.

There’s no pressure to have everything figured out before reaching out. Start with where your manuscript is now, and we’ll take it from there.
